When a believer replaces God’s will with his own, he will find himself in a backslidden condition, out of fellowship with God, in an unenviable state. Although we sometimes yield to our self-centered nature, God is always ready to welcome us back. Because of His “lovingkindness” and “tender mercies,” it gives Him joy when we forsake our rebellious ways, return to Him, and ask for forgiveness (Ps. 51:1-2; Luke 15).

As 19-year-old Amelia waited in her doctor’s office, she recognized the familiar hymn “Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling” playing over the speaker. It made her smile when she remembered the words. Perhaps a song with the lyrics “shadows are gathering, deathbeds are coming” was not the most appropriate background music for a doctor’s office!
Some find this old hymn too sentimental for their taste. But the message of the chorus can be encouraging for the wayward sinner:
Come home, come home,
Ye who are weary, come home;
Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling,
Calling, “O sinner, come home!”

Trong khi Amelia 19 tuổi chờ trong phòng mạch bác sĩ, cô nhận ra bài thánh ca quen thuộc “Giê-xu Đang Êm Dịu Tha Thiết Kêu Gọi” đang dạo trên máy phóng thanh. Cô mỉm cười khi nhớ tới lời ca. Có lẽ bài hát với lời ca “bóng tối đang vây bọc, lưỡi hái tử thần thình lình” không phải là loại nhạc nền thích hợp nhất cho một phòng mạch bác sĩ!
Một số người thấy thánh ca xưa này quá ủy mị đối với họ. Nhưng sứ điệp của điệp khúc có thể là khích lệ đối với tội nhân bướng bỉnh:
Về mau, chớ trễ,
Người mệt nhọc nên mau đến với Chúa;
Giê-xu đang êm dịu tha thiết kêu gọi mọi người,
Ai ơi, hối tâm về quê ngay!”
Khi tín nhân thay ý mình cho ý Chúa, thì người đang ở trong tình trạng thối lui, ở ngoài mối thông công với Đức Chúa Trời, trong trạng thái không đáng mong muốn. Tuy đôi lúc chúng ta chìu theo bản tính ích kỷ, nhưng Đức Chúa Trời luôn sẵn sàng tiếp đón chúng ta về nhà. Do lòng “nhân từ thương xót” và “đức bác ái,” Ngài vui vẻ khi chúng ta từ bỏ đường lối bội nghịch quay về với Ngài, và cầu xin sự tha thứ (Thi Thiên 51:1-2; Lu-ca 15).
