When I played American football as a kid, one thing that took some getting used to was all the equipment we had to wear. Running effectively in a helmet, shoulder pads, and a variety of other protective items can feel awkward and clumsy at first. But over time the protective gear becomes like a familiar friend that provides welcome protection against serious injury. When a football player suits up, he knows that his equipment is designed to protect him in battle against a dangerous opponent.
As followers of Christ, we also face a dangerous foe—a spiritual enemy who seeks our downfall and destruction. Fortunately, our Lord has provided us with protection, and He challenges us to suit up for spiritual battle.
In Ephesians 6:13, we read, “Take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” Paul then describes our armor—helmet, breastplate, shield, sword, belt, and shoes. These pieces of spiritual equipment are effective only if we put them on and use them—even if they might feel uncomfortable at first. Faithfulness in the Word (v.17), in prayer (v.18), and in witness (vv.19-20) are critical to making our armor feel like a part of us. So suit up! The battle is on! —Bill Crowder

Khi tôi chơi bóng đá Mỹ lúc nhỏ, có một thứ cần phải làm quen, đó là việc mang đủ món trên người. Đội mũ bảo hộ, đệm vai, cùng nhiều thứ bảo vệ khác, có thể khiến cảm thấy khó chịu, vụng về khi chạy bộ lúc đầu. Nhưng theo thời gian, bộ thiết bị bảo hộ trở thành giống như người bạn quen thuộc, giúp đề phòng thương tổn nghiêm trọng. Khi trang bị chu đáo, cầu thủ bóng đá biết các thiết bị nhằm bảo vệ mình khi thi đấu với đối thủ hiểm nguy. Là môn đồ Đấng Christ, chúng ta cũng đối diện với kẻ thù hiểm nguy kẻ thù thuộc linh tìm cách xô ngã và hủy diệt chúng ta. May mắn là Chúa chúng ta đã cung ứng thiết bị bảo vệ và Ngài thách thức chúng ta tự trang bị cho cuộc chiến thuộc linh. Ê-phê-sô 6:13 bảo chúng ta “Hãy trang bị mọi khí giới của Đức Chúa Trời, để anh em có thể chống cự lại, và khi chiến thắng mọi sự rồi, anh em được đứng vững vàng.” Sau đó Phao-lô mô tả khí giới của chúng ta mũ, áo giáp che ngực, thuẫn, gươm, thắt lưng, và giày. Những thiết bị thuộc linh này chỉ hiệu quả khi chúng ta mang vào người và sử dụng ho dù có thể gây khó chịu lúc đầu.
